Grandma’s secret had us all in stitches

-

Grandma was a character And really loved to sew. She sewed up this and stitched up that Then put it out on show. She’d be there quietly sewing With her cup of tea, Her hair pinned back and specs in place Stitching her embroidery. We thought when she was sewing She looked a little daft, We’d say she stitched for England And she’d say she’d have the last laugh! Her mind was as sharp as her needles And those needles ran wild and free And we even had framed in our hallway A cross-stitched family tree. But she was no ‘poor Grandma’; She had an adventurous side And often tripped off to France alone Saying it was ‘just for the ride’.

We wondered of her exploits But she would not disclose As off she set with her suitcase, Quite big for her size 8 clothes! We loved our dear old Grandma She was everything and more That you could wish in a Grandma Never a gossipy bore.

Then after her passing, Her memory to enhance, We took the route that she would take And popped across to France. We went from Dover to Calais, Just a nip across the sea, Then driving for a little bit We arrived at Normandy. We noticed there in one of the towns A very long ‘British’ queue, So decided we would join it, We had nothing else to do. Then inside the building Was the shock of our lives so far — The Bayeux Tapestry had been signed ‘The last laugh from Grandma’. We immediately returned back home To check out Grandma’s suitcase, And there was the original tapestry She’d decided to replace! Sheila Webb, Chesham, Bucks.
