Commission­er to the Ministry of Agricultur­e. The change in diet can be summed up: Pre-war: Meat the main dish. Vegetables the ‘fillers’. Fruit a health accessory. Now: Meat a ‘flavouring’. Vegetables provide nourishmen­t and give the vitamins and minerals formerly derived from fruit.

COMMONS Speaker Betty Boothroyd, 70, dropped a bombshell yesterday by announcing her intention to quit this autumn. The former Tiller Girl, who eight years ago became the first-ever woman to be elected to the position, will retire as an MP at the same time.

IAN HISLOP, 62. The Swansea-born satirist, ‘the single most influentia­l voice in British politics’, has edited Private Eye for 36 years and been a team captain on the BBC’s Have I Got News For You for 32. Known for fending off libel cases, he said: ‘If you don’t annoy anyone enough for them to send you a writ, then you’re not doing your job.’

BORN ON THIS DAY

SIMONE VEIL (1927-2017). The French politician, an Auschwitz survivor, was among the first cohort of MEPs and was the first president of the European Parliament. She battled to legalise abortion in France and said of her critics: ‘The assembly was mainly filled with men, some of whom were secretly looking for contacts to arrange an abortion for a mistress.’

JACquES PERRIN (1941-2022). The French actor, who according to one obituary ‘didn’t smoulder so much as twinkle’, starred in the Oscar-winning film Cinema Paradiso and appeared opposite Catherine Deneuve in Les Demoiselle­s de Rochefort.

IN 1990, Ghost, starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg (who won an oscar for her role), was released. IN 2013, the hashtag #blacklives­matter was used for the first time.
