Celts’ Euro run only focus for Juranovic

- BRIAN MARJORIBANKS

JOSIP JURANOVIC last night admitted he was flattered to be linked with a move to Atletico Madrid — but says he remains focused on starring in the Champions League with Celtic. Spanish giants Atletico are in the market for a new right-back and the Croatia international fits the bill. The versatile 26-yearold, who will represent his country in the World Cup in Qatar this winter, impressed in his first season at Parkhead following a £2.5million switch from Legia Warsaw. However, with Celtic in the Champions League group stages for the first time in five years after reclaiming the Premiership title, Juranovic claims he is simply looking forward to taking on the cream of European football on big nights in the east end of Glasgow. ‘I hope there was something in the stories (about Atletico Madrid) but, honestly, I didn’t even ask our manager or anything about it — I didn’t care,’ he told Zagrebbased media outlet RTL. ‘I have to keep my feet firmly on the ground. It was Atletico Madrid after all, but I’m at a big club already, Celtic. ‘Finally, I have the chance to play in the Champions League here. Just to hear the atmosphere, that anthem and to get to play on that stage. ‘With Croatia, when you have a team-mate like Josko Gvardiol, who has been mentioned to make an £80m move, you immediately gain great confidence being in the same side as someone like him. ‘Then we have players like Martin Erlic, Josip Sutalo and Josip Stanisic — they have all won good transfers to big clubs. So the future is bright for Croatian football.’
