Dons seal £100,000 deal to sign Roberts from Notts County

- By STEPHEN McGOWAN

ABERDEEN have agreed a £100,000 deal for Notts County’s attacking midfielder Callum Roberts. The former Kilmarnock loan player travelled to the Granite City last night to sign a three-year contract at Pittodrie. Speaking after Sunday’s Premier Sports Cup win over Raith Rovers, Dons boss Jim Goodwin said he had his eye on two new signings. Englishman Roberts, 25, is the first of those after agreeing to become the second new Dons arrival from County after rightback Jayden Richardson. Former England Under-20s cap Roberts was a standout at Meadow Lane last season.

A product of Newcastle United’s youth academy, he made his debut for the Magpies first team in 2015. He was then given his full debut by Rafael Benitez in an FA Cup win against Blackburn in January 2019, in which he also scored. Having had loan spells at Gateshead, Killie and Colchester, he made his mark with Blyth Spartans, scoring 17 goals in 25 appearances in season 2019-20, before signing for

Notts County in January 2020 and helping them reach the play-offs. Goodwin said: ‘Callum is technically a very good player. He scored 16 goals last season, which is an impressive return. ‘Jayden obviously knows him very well as they both played on the right-hand side for County and were very successful together. ‘I’ve spoken about the need for a bit more creativity and the good thing about Callum is that he can play off the right as a No10 or also in central midfield as an attacking midfielder. ‘So he gives us a number of different options. He’s a great age with good energy and pace and is another exciting one for the fans to look forward to.’
