‘He looked me in the eye and grabbed my shoulders then headbutted me’

- By James Tozer

THE former girlfriend of Ryan Giggs spelled out in graphic detail yesterday how he allegedly headbutted her.

Kate Greville told jurors he grabbed her by the shoulders and headbutted her in the face after she confronted him with proof he had been cheating on her.

Miss Greville, 38, told Manchester Crown Court how she returned alone to his £1.7million mansion after showing him screenshots of incriminating messages following an argument at dinner.

She and her younger sister, Emma, who had been dogsitting, prepared to ‘get my stuff and the dog’ and flee to her father’s house, she said.

But before they had finished packing, Giggs returned in his Range Rover and blocked her car in, and they began tussling over her mobile phone, she said.

The PR executive claimed the former Manchester United star pushed her backwards and ‘pinned’ her to the floor of a utility room.

He then grabbed the handset from her hand, leaving her fearing she had broken her elbow. After grabbing her phone from her, Giggs moved to the kitchen where he falsely told her he had called police and was going to tell officers that she had attacked him and was a ‘psycho’.

Miss Greville told the jury she retorted: ‘I’m glad the police are coming because you attacked me and I will tell them what happened.’

She said that was when said Giggs ‘looked me in the eye’ before he ‘grabbed me by my shoulders and headbutted me in my face’.

Asked by prosecutor Peter Wright QC if he gave any warning, she replied: ‘No, none whatsoever.’

She said she told Giggs: ‘I can’t believe you have just done that.’

‘I was in shock,’ she added. ‘I fell backwards.’ She said ‘my lip instantly swelled. I could taste the blood.’

Giggs is charged with controlling and coercive behaviour against Kate Greville between August 2017 and November 2020, assaulting Kate Greville, causing her actual bodily harm, and common assault of Emma Greville at his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester, on 1 November 2020. He denies all the charges.

Jurors heard the prosecution claim yesterday that Giggs and Miss Greville’s ‘toxic’ relationship was punctuated with accusations of infidelity, break-ups and violent rows.

But giving evidence yesterday about the alleged confrontation on November 1, 2020, she said: ‘All the other times he had hurt me, this was different. This was with real intent. He really wanted to hurt me.’

Miss Greville said she urged her sister Emma to phone police, at which Giggs allegedly said: ‘You need to think about this, Kate.

‘This will ruin me and it will ruin you. Think about my job, think about my career, think about my kids.’

She said she retorted: ‘Well, you shouldn’t have done it then.’

Shortly afterwards police arrived and Giggs, 48, was arrested.

Jurors heard Miss Greville, who gave evidence from behind a screen, became choked up and tearful as she recounted the final months of their relationship. They were told she had

already decided to leave Giggs before the alleged headbutt after she discovered evidence of his affairs.

But that afternoon she had gone with him to the Stock Exchange Hotel in Manchester – part-owned by Giggs and fellow ex-United star Gary Neville – to meet friends.

An argument followed at dinner, Miss Greville said, when she told him about how a man had previously asked her out for a drink.

She said he ‘stormed out’ out of the restaurant and up to their hotel room where they were to stay the night. ‘He had packed up all of my things and said he wanted me to get out,’ she told the court.

Miss Greville said she ‘blurted out’ to Giggs that she finally had proof that he had been cheating on her.

‘He screamed and told me to get out’, she said. She took a taxi back to the property, but Giggs arrived minutes later. ‘He was very angry,’ she said. ‘I had not seen him that angry before. He was drunk.’

She said she pleaded with Giggs to let her take their dog, which she said was ‘my absolute world’. Her voice shaking, she claimed Giggs told her: ‘I’ll make sure you never see that dog ever again.’ The trial continues.
