PLAYER RATINGS

- BY JOHN McGARRY

RANGERS (4-3-3) TEAM AVERAGE 7.0

JON McLAUGHLIN 7 Couple of routine saves was the sum total of his labours in the first period. Made some smart saves late on.

JAMES TAVERNIER 7 Calmest man inside Ibrox to stroke home the pivotal penalty right on half-time. Led by example.

CONNOR GOLDSON 6.5 Relieved to see Van Der Hayden’s free header from a corner flash over. Some sloppy moments.

JAMES SANDS 6.5 Lapse in concentration presented a chance to Adingra. Took a booking for the team after Kent lost ball.

BORNA BARISIC 7

Actually over-hit the cross which led to the penalty but peppered the box with some telling deliveries.

JOHN LUNDSTRAM 7 Was indebted to Sands for bailing him out after a slack crossfield pass. Had a good curling effort saved.

SCOTT ARFIELD 7 Found space in behind the Belgian defence hard to come by. His effort allowed Colak to net rebound.

TOM LAWRENCE 8 Offered cover when the Belgians countered. Took responsibility by dropping deep to demand the ball.

MALIK TILLMAN 7.5 Leapt like a salmon to meet Barisic’s cross and head Rangers into the play-off round.

ANTONIO COLAK 7 Flashed one header over before forcing the keeper into a fine save with another. Brave to nod home his goal.

RYAN KENT 6.5 Got the better of Nieuwkoop initially but started to get caught on the ball. Lack of fitness held him back.

SUBSTITUTES Matondo (Arfield 64), Morelos (Colak 79), Davies (Sands 79), Kamara (Lawrence 87). Not used: McGregor, McCrorie, Yilmaz, Jack, Davis, Wright, Sakala, King.

GIO VAN BRONCKHORST 7.5 Became the first Rangers manager in history to turn a two-goal deficit on its head. Got selection spot on.

UNION SAINT-GILLOISE (3-5-2): Moris 5; Sykes 5 (Eckert 83), Burgess 5, Van Der Heyden 4; Nieuwkoop 6 (Francois 77), Teuma 5, Amani 5, Lynen 5 (Puertas 87), Lapoussin 5; Adingra 5, Vanzeir 5. Booked: Sykes, Moris, Adingra, Lazare, Lapoussin. Sent off: Lazare.

REF TASOS SIDIROPOULOS (GRE) 7 Heeded assistant referee’s advice as he considered sending Sands off and rightly sent Amani packing.
