She accuses Truss of being jealous of Vogue photoshoot

- By Tom Eden

THE war of words between Nicola Sturgeon and Liz Truss has escalated after the First Minister accused the Tory leadership favourite of being jealous of her glossy magazine shoot.

The Foreign Secretary previously suggested the best approach to Miss Sturgeon’s repeated calls for independence was to ‘ignore’ her, branding her an ‘attention seeker’ at a Tory party hustings last week.

Miss Sturgeon said she has met the prospective prime minister on only one occasion and claimed she was only interested in talking about appearing in Vogue magazine. Speaking at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Miss Sturgeon said: ‘I had just been interviewed by Vogue so I had just had a photoshoot with Vogue, as you do.

‘That was the main thing she wanted to talk about – how you get into Vogue.

‘I said, “Well, they came and asked me”, and – I didn’t really mean to do this – but I said that it hadn’t actually been my first time in Vogue. She looked a little bit like she had swallowed a wasp.

‘There we were at the world’s biggest climate change conference in Glasgow [Cop26] and that was the main topic of conversation she was interested in pursuing.’

Asked about her reaction to the comments about ignoring her demands for another referendum, Miss Sturgeon said: ‘It makes me angry on behalf of Scotland. I am the democratically elected First Minister of Scotland. When you say I should be ignored, then… what you are effectively saying is

Scotland should be ignored, and we’ve heard that for too long from the Tories.’

Scottish Conservative chairman Craig Hoy said: ‘Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP are not Scotland and any criticism of the First Minister or her party is not a criticism of Scotland – and Scots know this.’
