Kane: Bellingham tried to put me off penalty

- GARY KEOWN

HARRY KANE has insisted there was no chance he was letting England team-mate Jude Bellingham distract him from scoring a penalty in last night’s Champions League semi-final first leg. Vinicius Jr netted twice to earn Real Madrid a crucial 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

Striker Kane scored from the penalty spot to put Bayern 2-1 up but not before Real midfielder Bellingham had attempted to put him off. On what Bellingham said to him before the spot-kick, Kane replied: ‘I don’t know what he was saying. I saw him mumbling something. Once I’m in that moment, I’m in my zone, trying to block everyone out. ‘I’m sure he was saying something to try to put me off.’ Leroy Sane had cancelled out Vinicius Jr’s opener before Kane’s penalty, given after Lucas Vazquez stuck a lazy leg out to bring Jamal Musiala down inside the box, put Bayern ahead.

But Real’s Brazilian superstar Vinicius Jr had the final say, equalising from the penalty spot after Kim Min-jae clumsily brought Rodrygo down. England captain Kane admitted Bayern were disappointed not to be taking a lead to Madrid for next week’s second leg.

‘Once we got 2-1 ahead, we had two or three good chances,’ he said. ‘This is the Champions League semi-final. We expected a tough game.

‘Real are one of the best teams in Europe and can punish you with one or two actions. ‘All to play for next week. We know we can have chances next week. We just have to take them.’

Kane has now scored eight goals in the Champions League in his first season with Bayern. He added: ‘It’s been a good season so far. Everything we’re fighting for this year is in this competition.

‘At the start of the season, the expectation was to win trophies. The Champions League is the biggest one. If we can somehow get our hands on that one, it would be an amazing season.’
