The Green House, Ettrickbridge

Reviewed by Aileen & Steven McFarlane from Edinburgh A lovely one hour drive from Edinburgh, brought us through Selkirk into the picturesque village of Ettrickbridge. The location is an excellent base to explore the Borders countryside, walking, driving or cycling. We found The Green House easily with the owners clear and concise directions.

The house sits in the heart of the family’s land whilst still enjoying total privacy. All around the property is a secure and secluded garden for children to explore and enjoy outdoor play and be up close to the enclosed field of the sheep and chickens that are part of the small-holding. There is also an abundance of wild birds and rabbits.

The owner, Verity arranged to meet us on arrival and introduced us to the house and all of its facilities. It was really interesting to hear how the house was built and how it is heated with renewable energy. Mobile phone reception is unavailable but there is WIFI and a landline for the guests to use to organise incoming calls.

The house is spacious and immaculate, well equipped for all ages and tastefully decorated to reflect the focus of nature and their priority of being environmentally friendly.

The separate armadillo pod which allows users to increase to groups of six is a great idea. We can imagine this being a real novelty to children and adults to have the feeling of camping whilst retaining all the home comforts of the main house.

We loved reading through the guest book and it is clear that we are not alone in recommending The Green House. Words and statements such as ‘fabulous escape’, ‘peaceful, spacious and family friendly’ are common throughout the four years of guests comments.

And finally – Jam, home baking and eggs – what a treat. Prices from £320 for a short break
