For a totally different experience - staying in a canvas cottage in a stunning secluded wooded location within the Dundas Castle Estate is very special. Dundas Castle is located close to South Queensferry and only a short drive from Edinburgh. The Glampotel – which is part of a glamping chain with locations in Dorset, Berkshire, Derby and Hampshire – currently has five canvas cottages (one dog friendly) which opened for guests during August 2016.

When we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by Louise and Marty and they helpfully showed us how to use the barbecue, wood-burning stove, patio heater and other facilities. A cool box and a breakfast hamper with a range of Scottish produce including smoked salmon were also provided.

The ‘cottage’, which was surprisingly large and extremely well equipped, was of a high quality. The king size bed was very comfortable, with hardwood flooring and a wood-burning stove making for a cosy experience. There were also two camping beds available for children to stay.

The Glampotel is also an eco-tourism experience. Solar and sensor lights are used both inside and out, along with a solar-powered charger to keep devices charged. The ensuite bathroom, with hot and cold water, has a composting toilet and bio-degradable toiletries. Guests are encouraged not to waste water.

We enjoyed being close to the great outdoors by keeping the entrance of the ‘cottage’ open during the daylight hours or by sitting on the secluded private deck having our meals. This also enabled us to have a lovely view of the loch with its large number of birds and interesting boathouse. Dundas Castle Estate is home to an abundance of wildlife including llamas. There are several signposted easy walks within the estate with excellent views of the castle, golf course and the surrounding countryside.

This was luxurious, glamorous camping and an experience we would more than willingly repeat. Prices from £149 per night for two adults
