Stonehouses, Ullapool Reviewed by Doug & Lorna Carter from Edinburgh

In this year of all things ‘hygge’, Gavin and Rachel Anderson’s luxury lodge retreat set high on a hill overlooking Ullapool must be one of the best examples of this trend. We stayed in the turf roofed Curvedstone House which is positioned slightly lower up the hill than the neighbouring Treetop House.

Both were designed by Stuart Bagshaw, a local architect, and built to extraordinarily high standards by local crafts people and artisans using stone from a nearby quarry and locally-sourced wood.

From the minute you step into the underfloor heated hallway, then the living area with it’s tripleglazed windows offering views over Ullapool and Loch Broom, you can feel your stress levels ebbing away.

You can sit up in the sumptuous bed after a blissful night’s sleep and watch the sun come up over the Summer Isles. Or watch the Stornoway ferry dock in the harbour below whilst lying in the double-ended freestanding bath. There is also a sauna with windows sharing the same stunning views and an adjoining double rain shower.

The design, colour schemes and attention to detail in the lodge are second to none. WiFi is available, the kitchen is superbly equipped and there is a wood burning stove.

Details which raise this place to another level include fresh flowers, bubbly, welcome pack of local produce, Orkney pottery, divine toiletries, luxurious Egyptian cotton sheets, walls adorned with works by contemporary local artists, wood beamed ceilings, and the special touch of the gorse wood doorhandles on all cupboards. We could go on.

We had lunch at The Ceilidh Place, an impressive combination of hotel, bar, restaurant and bookshop.

Through a combination of hard work and passion, Gavin and Rachel have achieved the ultimate blend of luxury craftsmanship and innovative environmentalism. Prices from £1100 per week
