CHEF’S CHOICE
Peter McKenna, Chef/Owner at The Gannet in Glasgow, chooses six of his favourite restaurants
EDINBURGH FOOD STUDIO
I love what Ben and Sashana are doing. I’ve been quite a few times and it’s always a different experience with some exceptional guest chefs taking the reins. www.edinburghfoodstudio.com, 0131 258 0758
BIA BISTROT, EDINBURGH
I always get a warm welcome here. Roisin and I went to catering college together many moons ago in Donegal. Matt and Roisin never miss a service as it’s only the two of them in the kitchen. I love the game and their bone marrow with caramelised onion. Their menu is full of flavour. www.biabistrot.co.uk, 0131 452 8453
ASIAN GOURMET, GLASGOW
Ivan and I bring the staff here a couple of times a year. We always order popcorn chicken, duck tongue, salt and chilli frog legs, spicy tofu. My tip is to order from the Asian menu, not the English. 0141 332 1639
EL PERRO NEGRO, GLASGOW
This regular pop-up has the best burgers I’ve ever tasted, hands down. Forget about stacked garnish burgers, these patties don’t need any help to pack a punch. A great blend of different cuts of beef. Go for the top dog, you will not be disappointed. www.facebook.com/ElPerroNegroStreetfoodGlasgow/
CAIL BRUICH, GLASGOW
Chris and the team have been cooking beautiful food on Great Western Road for years. I had a wonderfully cooked plate of lamb loin, sweetbreads and peas last time I had dinner with them, this is a firm favourite. www.cailbruich.co.uk, 0141 334 6265
CRABSHAKK, GLASGOW
Last but certainly not least, John and Lynn's small but perfectly formed seafood Mecca in Finnieston put the area on the map long before it became the trendy hub it is today. One of Glasgow's most vibrant restaurants, they specialise in fresh seafood from the West Coast and islands. If you haven’t been, get the crab cakes – you won’t find better. www.crabshakk.com, 0141 334 6127
