Prestonfield House Hotel, Edinburgh

You may well know Edinburgh; you may even have visited one of the many hotels there, but Prestonfield is different. Tucked down the streets of residential suburbia you drive down a semi-lit drive to find a magnificent place.

From the minute you arrive it’s like stepping into a grand private house. Men in kilts help you from the car then through the gold-handled doors to the rooms. Here the opulent décor is carefully mixed with subtle modern touches like smart TVs and WiFi. And luxuries like Champagne and sweet treats made by the in-house pastry chef.

Getting ready for dinner in the marble bathrooms is a joy. At dinner we were expertly guided through a very seasonal but extensive menu and drinks list. We were fortunate to dine in the salon privé overlooking the gardens which is an intimate dining room for an extra special occasion. By the end of main course we wanted to stretch our legs so dessert was brought to our rooms with coffee.

Then to breakfast where we dined in the window overlooking the grounds and the peacocks. All the delights of continental and cooked breakfasts are there, and even with a late checkout it feels a shame to leave. If you live in Edinburgh you should treat yourself to a night at Prestonfield, this is the perfect place to start a glamorous trip. Prices from £335 per room per night
