Knockshannoch Lodge, Glen Isla

Reviewed by Debi Kirk & Sandy MacLean from Edinburgh

We’re used to the hustle and bustle of city life, but like nothing better than to get away and explore. We particularly love staying in unique places with a bit of history, so you can imagine how delighted we were when we saw Knockshannoch Lodge emerging from the trees as we drove through scenic Glen Isla. Set back from the road, this thatched roundhouse, built in 1880, is the last remaining one in Scotland and sits in an elevated position with views across the glen.

On arrival we were warmly welcomed by Pam, Mark and their son Archie. The lovely individual touches of both the interior and exterior added so much character to this quirky home from home, which has been restored with great care and attention to detail. We were touched by the family’s thoughtfulness and enjoyed the freshly baked bread, wine, eggs from their own chickens and fresh flowers they left for us.

The beautiful garden is a sanctuary for wildlife and feeders for birds, deer and squirrels have been placed to encourage these visitors. We were lucky enough to see pheasants and several varieties of birds. Red squirrels and pine marten are also frequent visitors.

We spent our days walking in the glen and enjoyed seeing the abundant wildlife, including deer and birds of prey. Evenings were spent cooking in the cosy kitchen and playing backgammon in front of the log burner. No evening was complete without a stroll under the stars – truly magical. With no light pollution this is a perfect place for star gazing.

This is a rural idyll, perfect for people who love the sound of silence and want to get close to nature. Prices from £400 per week
