I WANT IT BECAUSE: Its luxurious calfskin leather makes this easily the most comfortable golf shoe I’ve ever worn. It’s also available in 20 different size and width variations.

USEFUL FOR: Summer ground too hard for a traditional spike.

HIGH POINT: They are waterproof but so soft they didn’t give me blisters on first use (which is a first).

LOW POINT: They’re a little too contemporary for an old fart like me.

WHAT IS IT: Helm 1, one-man tent by Terra Nova. RRP £160 www.terra-nova.co.uk

I WANT IT BECAUSE: It’s a well proportioned, well-made one-man tent that’s easy and quick to pitch and stable in a gale. It’s got good accessibility and a porch big enough for a rucksack and pair of wet boots.

USEFUL FOR: Treks into the hills and fishing trips when more than a claustrophobic minimalist tent is required.

HIGH POINT: Space/weight ratio is very impressive. LOW POINT: None really.
