THE CATERAN TRAIL

Named after the Caterans, renowned cattle thieves from days past, this network of 64 miles of trails passes through woodland, moorland and the villages they used to raid. The full loop will take around five days. www.pkct.org

DUNKELD

Located on the banks of the River Tay, Dunkeld is a magnet for walkers. The nearby Hermitage Woodland Walk is not to be missed and wildlife lovers can visit the Scottish Wildlife Trust Visitor Centre to spot Osprey nests. www.dunkeldand­birnam.org.uk

LOCH LEVEN

A 13-mile route around this fresh water loch offers plenty of spots to stop for refreshmen­ts or simply to drink in the view. It’s a classified National Nature Reserve so remember to keep any canine companions under close control. www.lochlevenh­eritagetra­il.co.uk

THE OCHILS

These hills are great for walkers short on time due to their convenienc­e from both Stirling and Perth. The circular Ben Cleuch route takes in the highest of the Ochils, and, on a good day, allows views west over the Southern Highlands. www.visitscotl­and.com

FASKALLY WOOD

The forest is easily explored as part of a longer walk or, for little walkers, can be visited as a short day trip. Renowned for its beauty during the autumn months, an accompanyi­ng music and light show make this a great family destinatio­n. www.scotland.forestry.gov.uk
