THE BEST OF SOUTHERN SCOTLAND
TWEED VALLEY FOREST PARK
Made up of seven forests dotted along the valley of the River Tweed, the park is a haven for walkers. A testing climb to the Three Brethren at Yair to take in the views is a must. www.scotland.forestry.gov.uk/ forest-parks/tweed-valley-forest-park
GALLOWAY FOREST
Three visitor centres and a huge choice of terrain and distances make this a great one for families. As one of only two gold tier Dark Sky Parks in the country, visitors can stay after sunset to stargaze in the observatory. www.scotland.forestry.gov.uk/ forest-parks/galloway-forest-park
RHINNS OF KELLS
A demanding but rewarding classic highlevel ridge in Galloway. For those with less time, or less energy, take the option of doing the ridge in sections or explore the shorter walks on the lower slopes. www.walkhighlands.co.uk/galloway/corserine.shtml
BERWICKSHIRE COASTLINE
Stretching from Cockburnspath to Berwickupon-Tweed, the Berwickshire Coastal Path is waymarked and easy to pick up or leave at any point for a shorter walk. Don’t forget to stop and explore the iconic Fast Castle ruin near Coldingham. www.scotborders.gov.uk/berwickshirecoastalpath
ETTRICK AND YARROW VALLEYS
Spot the remnants of the Borders’ reiving past whilst passing the ruins of tower houses on the valley slopes. Plenty of established tracks make for quiet and easy walking. www.ettrickandyarrow.co.uk
