MOUNT KEEN
Scotland’s most easterly Munro is a surprisingly moderate climb. With two main routes up, start from Glen Mark for a quick ascent, or from Glen Tanar for a leisurely route through the native Caledonian pine forest. www.munromagic.com/RouteInfo.cfm?RouteID=151
KIRKHILL FOREST
Follow a waymarked route through the woods to find Tappie Tower, a 19th-century folly that offers views north towards Bennachie. Trails are generally quiet, so a good choice for four-legged friends. www.scotland.forestry.gov.uk/visit/ kirkhill
CASTLE FRASER

BENNACHIE
Begin exploring these hills with a visit to the Bennachie Centre. Follow one of the gentle waymarked trails around the lowlying forest or opt for the challenging Mither Tap Quarry Trail summiting Oxen Craig, the highest peak in the range. www.bennachievisitorcentre.org.uk
