ARRAN COASTAL WAY
Circling the island of Arran, this longdistance walk is ideal for committed walkers who enjoy a challenge. At 65 miles long, it’s perfect for a week-long walking holiday. www.coastalway.co.uk
GOATFELL
The highest peak on Arran is a must for walkers visiting the island. Routes along its ridges allow the rest of the peaks in the range to be explored as part of longer walks. At the summit, the picturesque views allow for some fabulous photos. www.nts.org.uk
LOCH DOON
Hike up the waymarked Craiglea trail to enjoy breathtaking views of the loch below or follow the river through the dramatic Ness Glen. Take your time and explore the ruins of the old castle, famously moved to a new location, stone by stone, when a hydro electric station was built on the loch. www.scotland.forestry.gov.uk
TURNBERRY
A stroll along the beach and up on to the headland, skirting the world-famous golf course, to Turnberry lighthouse is well worth the effort to enjoy the view from this iconic landmark. www.ayrshirescotland.com
AUCHINCRUIVE ESTATE
Plenty of gentle waymarked trails make this a good destination for families. The Three Green Knights Trail along the bank of the River Ayr is great for little legs. Or, for something longer, try Oswald’s Trail which combines riverside paths with a stroll through the estate’s arboretum. www.woodlandtrust.org.uk
