Callater Lodge, Braemar

Arriving at Callater we were impressed with the natural Scottish flavour of the décor without feeling as if we had been marooned in a scene from Brigadoon! Our room was spacious, modern and comfortable, while the en suite shower room was very up to date and immaculately clean.

We chose to have tea (and delicious homebaking) in the guests’ sitting room and it was at this point that we realised what a very special place this is. As we spoke with the owners Julian and Katy, it was evident that they have a natural passion for what they do and for the area. Later in the evening we chose to partake in the whisky tasting offered to guests. It was obvious that Julian was extremely knowledgeable as he expertly guided us through our selection.

We had our evening meal at the Braemar Lodge, situated immediately opposite our accommodation and ended the evening falling into a very comfy bed.

Callater is convenient for brown trout fishing on the Rivers Clunie, Gairn and Shee. The Invercauld and Mar Lodge Estates offer shooting, stalking and fishing.

Breakfast the next day was excellent and freshly prepared from a varied menu which we were able to choose from the evening before. We ate this in a lovely bright dining room which had crisp tablecloths and fresh flowers on every table. After breakfast, we chatted with Katy and Julian before we said farewell, and really felt as if we were leaving new friends who we would certainly want to visit again.
