CHEF’S CHOICE
Jamie Robertson, chef director at Gaucho in Edinburgh and around the world chooses his six favourite places to eat in Scotland
ANGELS WITH BAGPIPES, EDINBURGH
I love walking up the Royal Mile with the castle in front of me. It’s a beautiful street, and when you arrive here the food is exceptional. It’s a great small menu, seasonal, using local ingredients and always different. www.angelswithbagpipes.co.uk, 0131 220 1111
THE SCRAN AND SCALLIE, EDINBURGH
Stockbridge is the last place I lived when I was based in Edinburgh. It’s like a bit of the countryside in the middle of the city and Scran and Scallie combines the comfort of a cosy Sunday pub with top-end eating. Try the partridge, braised cabbage and crispy bacon. scranandscallie.com, 0131 332 6281
THE MOULIN INN, PITLOCHRY
This one is all about the setting; it’s amazing in winter when the fire is roaring. I grew up going for weekend walks in Pitlochry with my family, so it’s a special place for me. My favourite dish is the The Scotsman’s Bunnet. www.moulinhotel.co.uk, 01796 472196
ANSTRUTHER FISH BAR, FIFE
Widely recommended as one of the best in Scotland, which is why I went to try it, and I wasn’t disappointed. Try the lemon sole in batter, with loads of salt and vinegar. www.anstrutherfishbar.co.uk, 01333 310518
TIMBERYARD, EDINBURGH
Bringing modern and classic together, this restaurant appears quite rustic, with lots of open brick. The food is anything but, as they use some daring ingredients, like mutton tartar, sorrel and smoked oil. It’s amazing to see mutton elevated to something special. www.timberyard.co, 0131 221 1222
KOOLBA, GLASGOW
One of my favourite things on the face of this planet is a good curry – anything Indian really. I don’t normally go for anything other than a curry, but at Koolba I was recommended to try the biryani and was blown away. www.koolba.com, 0141 552 2777
