Stobo Castle, near Peebles Reviewed by Sheena Carss from Haddington

I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect when I was told that during my stay at Stobo Castle I would be in the Cashmere Suite, but even in my wildest imagination, I couldn’t have dreamed that it would be so luxurious. The suite is huge and the living area has large sofas, perfect for chilling out and enjoying the champagne and fruit basket provided. Doors lead onto a private terrace with loungers and furry blankets to fend off the Scottish winter, and the walls are covered in – you’ve guessed it – cashmere!

Through double doors, which are perfect for making a dramatic entrance, lies a huge bathroom with the most impressive, gigantic limestone bowl bath. The bedroom, complete with two huge four-poster beds, each with their own TV, also has a dressing room to the side. I was grateful that my treatment wasn’t booked in until the next morning, which meant I had plenty of time to enjoy what is undoubtedly the most decadent suite I’ve ever stayed in.

Dinner was well presented with healthy options available, and staff were friendly and attentive. After dinner I ventured out for a dip in one of the outdoor hot tubs. I could literally feel my body gently relaxing in the warm bubbles while my mind became lost in the gloriously starry night sky. A great night’s sleep came naturally and was followed by an early morning dip in the pool. I was lucky enough to have it all to myself and enjoyed looking out of the glass wall across the frost-bitten lawns to the castle grounds as the sun rose.

Breakfast was super-healthy (although cooked options are available too) in preparation for my treatment. I chose the aromatherapy massage and am ashamed to say that I dozed off several times as my therapist gently eased away any tension that remained in my muscles. A stay at Stobo Castle is a massive treat. Unlike a quick trip to a city spa, you can really lose yourself in the luxury of the whole experience there, without having to step back into reality the minute your treatment is over. The beauty of it is that you can go with your significant other, or treat your best friend, or if you’re in need of some ‘me time’ why not keep it all to yourself? Prices from £145 per person per night with dinner, breakfast, lunch and spa access.
