Fairmont, St Andrews

Every time I’ve visited St Andrews, the sun has been shining. On this occasion, I was lucky enough to be able to see the sea from my accommodation at the Fairmont hotel. From outside, the place looks unremarkable, but inside you are instantly impressed by the huge open fire in the reception and the friendly staff on-hand to help with luggage and check-in.

A staircase leads down into the grand atrium, which is lit by the glorious bespoke lighting chandelier ‘Zephyr’ by artist George Singer. The installation moves and shimmers in the light like an abstract salmon suspended from the roof.

Dining options at the Fairmont are varied. My favourite was the Savoy afternoon tea, which was taken in the atrium lounge with an indulgent glass of champagne. Everything was beautiful and provided me with a little London luxury in Fife.

Try the High Tea option, which comes with a decadent lobster dish with asparagus, egg and lemon hollandaise. The St Andrews Bar & Grill, La Cucina, Kittocks Den, The Squire restaurant and The Rock & Spindle each offer different dining options.

I was warmly welcomed into the spa and had my treatment explained to me before it commenced. I had chosen an Ishga Scottish Seaweed Scrub, which left my entire body tingling and feeling so moisturised and healthy that I decided not to return to the pool, Jacuzzi, sauna or steam room for fear of washing off the heavenly scented products.

Instead, I popped into the relaxation room for a peppermint tea before heading back to my room for more relaxation. My room was large with sea views across the golf course and the bed was supremely comfortable. The bathroom was spacious and modern with a walk-in shower and separate bath.

I would heartily recommend a break at Fairmont, especially if you want to treat yourself to a luxury spa, delicious food and of course, a little sunshine. Prices from £209 for two people with breakfast.
