Including the best country gear put to the test

WHAT IS IT?

Lowa Renegade Mid GTX, RRP £170. www.lowa.co.uk

I WANT IT BECAUSE:

It’s a great allround walking boot that’s specifically designed for a woman’s foot.

USEFUL FOR:

A wide range of walking; from the stroll to school to bagging Munros.

HIGH POINT:

Remarkably light for such sturdy, waterproof boots.

LOW POINT:

I’m concerned that the nubuck may not weather as well as leather, but so far, so good.

WHAT IS IT?

Teko Merino wool trekking socks, £17.95. www.anatomfootwear.co.uk

I WANT IT BECAUSE:

The merino wool wicks moisture and is antimicrobial, so if you’re on a long trek they stay dry and don’t smell, even after more than one day. They are also machine-washable.

USEFUL FOR:

Hiking, especially in the cold. They have heavyweight cushioning, so are very comfortable. Teko are also Scottish-owned.

HIGH POINT:

The Achilles Wrap System means you get extra support on your ankle and the bits that often chafe.

LOW POINT:

None so far,
