Driving into the Gleneagles estate, with its championship golf courses and immaculate grounds in spectacular countryside, you know that you have arrived at a world-class luxury hotel.

As it was a beautiful day, relaxing on the terrace gave us the opportunity to sit back and watch the other guests playing croquet, tennis, golf or taking a guided Segway tour, but our starting point was a delicious lunch in The Glendevon, although when we saw the signature afternoon tea being served we both thought ‘next time!’

On our way through the hotel, the restored 1920s heritage was apparent in the décor and furnishings. Our room was spacious and everything you would expect. After a quick unpack, next stop was the Health Club, with a choice of pools and great facilities hours could easily disappear before you even get to the luxury spa for more pampering.

The Century Bar was an ideal place for a drink and to make the decision on where to go for dinner. There are myriad choices, from a Michelin-starred restaurant to less formal options. We choose the Birnam Brasserie, the hotel’s newest restaurant, with a bistro style and relaxed atmosphere. After a fabulous meal which lived up to our expectations, we enjoyed a stroll around the grounds, a perfect end to the day.

After a good night’s sleep and a fantastic breakfast in the Strathearn it was time to meet up with George our instructor for clay pigeon shooting – with his expert tuition (and much to our surprise) we even hit a couple of clays each. Our one-night stay was not long enough; the staff were great and provided a very efficient service. We only scratched the surface with the facilities at this luxury hotel and although golf is the main attraction, there is so much more on offer.
