Scottish Field

Old Course Hotel

You know you’re in for a treat when a swift check-in is followed by the offer of a glass of bubbles before you’ve even reached your room, but my expectations were high as I strolled past the supercars parked at the entrance to the Old Course Hotel.

My suite didn’t disappoint, especially as I drew back the net curtains and looked out at the iconic view over the world’s oldest golf course to the sea and up to the town of St Andrews. The room was beautifully appointed and the jacuzzi bath was most appreciated.

I dined that evening in the Road Hole restaurant – surrounded by golfers – struggling to choose from the array of fine Scottish produce on the menu, which reads like a map of the country’s culinary hotspots. Scallops are hand-dived and fresh from the West Coast, steaks are from the Black Isle and lobster – most local of all – from St Andrews Bay. Service was great and the food was cooked and presented well. The French sommelier was fantastic, as friendly as he was knowledgeable, and helped me to choose the perfect bottle to go with dinner.

A good night’s sleep was followed by some serious pampering in the Kohler Waters Spa. Here I had time to relax in the pool, hydrotherapy area, steam room and roof top hot tub before a signature facial that left me floating on air with glowing skin. My therapist was lovely and treated me to a relaxing back treatment and hand massage.

I always knew this break would be special, but I didn’t know just how wonderful my memories would be.
