Oakwrights
In 2016, the Oakwrights Scottish team embarked on ‘The Skeldon project’ a dream retirement home for a client in the Ayrshire countryside.
The site was in an elevated position with stunning views to the West, particularly from the first floor level giving the architects a great canvas to create something beautiful. Craig and Andrew, members of the Oakwrights Architectural Design Team, developed a proposal that incorporated an open plan ground floor with large glazing elements out towards the Ayrshire coast that framed the beautiful scenery. Next was to position the master bedroom, complete with a vaulted oak frame glazed gable to soak in all that natural sun light and stunning views. The house was also designed with large patio doors leading out from the kitchen area and a cat slide roofed porch to the rear to allow protection from the elements after a nice country walk!
The key to this design was listening to clients’ requirements and fully understanding the potential of the site to allow Oakwrights to meet their brief while completely exceeding their aspirations.
This is a great property that Oakwrights regularly show other clients around because it highlights how important quality design, combined with a clever materials palate is, in creating a superb oak frame home.
Meet the Architects: Craig Thomson and Andrew Hunter
Craig and Andrew joined the Oakwrights Architectural Design Team in 2014, as part of the Oakwrights Scotland offering. Based in Ayrshire, both Craig and Andrew have a wide range of experience, including over 15 years’ working with oak frame buildings throughout the country.
Craig qualified as an Architect in 1984 beginning his partnership with Andrew in 2004, himself having qualified in 2006.
With a history of award-winning architecture achieved through strength of design, approachable attitude and willingness to work closely with clients, both Craig and Andrew have always taken the view that the most important part of architecture is to listen to the clients’ wishes and go above and beyond these with their design abilities. With that in mind they were a natural fit to partner with Oakwrights. Since then the team has gone from strength to strength, establishing a catalogue of excellent projects in locations throughout Scotland. These projects have ranged from small extensions to complex selfbuilds but have also included housing developments featuring numerous dwellings as well as commercial buildings.
Working alongside Craig and Andrew is a strong team of Architects, Technologists and Technicians providing invaluable support in the successful delivery of quality architecture backed up with detailed technical information.
The team offer a full service to self-builders in Scotland, taking the clients through the early stages of design to submission of planning applications. Once consent is achieved, the team work closely with the Oakwrights Frame Designers to assist in developing technical drawings for the purposes of obtaining a building warrant and fabrication of the oak frame itself.
