Ron Lawson ‘Tiree - The Land Beneath The Waves’

Ron Lawson, Scotland’s most original and distinctive landscape painter, opens a new Solo Exhibition in Glasgow, inspired by his love of Tiree

Ron Lawson is at his happiest when he’s on a Scottish island.

“I’ve visited every part of the Western Isles, Outer and Inner Hebrides, including a four day stay on St Kilda. I love them all. I never tire of returning to the islands - the openness of the landscape and the quite often remoteness of small communities and individual houses very much appeals to me” says Ron. And by showing this remoteness and the majesty and uniqueness of each island through his paintings, Ron Lawson has achieved what every artist desires – instantly recognisable work.

“In my paintings I try to capture the feeling of each island - they’re all dramatically different from each other. Even islands connected by a causeway vary incredibly - take South Uist and Eriskay as perfect examples. They all have their own individual qualities and challenges and that’s what provides such an appeal to me.” It is Tiree, perhaps Ron’s favourite island, that provides the focus for his main exhibition of 2019 this November in the Annan Gallery in Glasgow. “I love the colours of Tiree, the lush machair, the white sand, the turquoise water, the blue skies... and the not so blue skies... The daytime light is extraordinary, the blackness of nightime and the stars... breathtaking.” Featuring new paintings from locations throughout Tiree, Ron also visited the remote Skerryvore Lighthouse and the Isle of Lunga (to see the puffins) with each being subjects that will also feature in the new exhibition.

Ron also finds Tiree more challenging to paint than the other islands. The unusual nature of the architecture, totally unique to Tiree, brings an additional element of complexety to

Ron’s hightly detailed work. “But that’s the challenge for me as an artist, I’m looking to to convey the essence of Tiree, drawing the viewer into the paintings and creating a sense of being there. Hopefully anyone familiar with Tiree will approve of my interpretations” states Ron. Few artists in today’s market now regularly achieve sell-out exhibitions but Ron Lawson is one such artist which is testament to the quality of Ron’s art, his talent and hard work, spanning a painting career of over 40 years. Always humbled and grateful with the response to and demand for his paintings, Ron is above all delighted with an excuse for further research trips out to his beloved islands... ‘ Tiree - The Land Beneath The Waves’ featuring over 40 new paintings from Ron Lawson opens 10am on 16th November at the Annan Gallery, Glasgow Contact: gallery@annanart.com to receive an electronic catalogue ahead of the opening Exhibition from 16th November to 1st December 2019 Meet the Artist - Ron will be visiting the gallery on Saturday 16th November 2-4pm
