The Balmoral Hotel

- Reviewed by Fraser and Doreen Ballantyne from St Fillans, Perthshire

The hustle and bustle of Edinburgh life goes on outside No.1 Princes Street, Edinburgh, but step inside this iconic place and you have entered the haven of calmness and luxury that is The Balmoral Hotel.

The entrance to this magnificent building is covered by an abundance of flowers which we admired as our car was taken away by the valet parking service. This removed the great worry of Edinburgh parking. Due to the current situation masks were worn by all the staff but you could still see the smiling eyes as we were welcomed by a lovely lady from Finland. She explained the current regulations and the preparation that had been done to ensure that all the guests could relax and feel safe.

We were then taken to our room, and what a room it was. Three expansive windows gave us magnificent views up Princes Street to the castle and Old Town. The decor was in calming blues and greys and the bed could only be described as superb. The furnishings were comfy and the settee was the perfect place to watch the 60 inch smart TV. The marble bathroom was beautifully appointed and well stocked with toiletries by Irene Forte and made one look forward to a luxury bath before wrapping up in a fluffy bathrobe after some shopping. There was a very unusual wall in the bathroom , which boasted a full-length picture of Sean Connery!

Within minutes of our arrival a lovely fruit basket was delivered, along with a hand-written welcome note from the general manager. All too soon it was time to leave this wonderful hotel. A lovely experience and we will never forget the smiling eyes!
