International School of Aberdeen

ISA cultivates leaders, the makers of change

-

The staff and students at International School Aberdeen (ISA) are ready – now more than ever – to face the challenges of an uncertain world in 2021. The school itself is located in Aberdeen but is also a gateway to a wider world beyond. It is a community that, like its students, learns and adapts.

Of course, part of last year, the campus was closed during lockdown and ISA’s teaching moved online providing the ISA Virtual School. Although challenging, the school excelled and demonstrated their community continues to thrive in both virtual and actual environments.

As we enter 2021, the building is empty again, but it is worth remembering that a school is more than just a building; it is a set of relationships. A community. Many of our students are from the local area, but many others join us from around the world. As an international school, ISA is the family away from home for many.

Whilst ISA prides itself on preparing students for this rapidly evolving, globalised world, without a doubt the success of online study has depended on the qualities of ISA students themselves: resilience, self-management, and an openness to new ways of doing things. A sense of agency is vital to responding to uncertain times: some are born with this attribute; but all can develop it. And this is where ISA is uniquely placed.

Obedient students wait for orders; ISA cultivates leaders, the makers of change.

In 2020, ISA continued its 100% pass rate in the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma and, yet again, its students scored 10% above world averages in an already elite qualification.

Who knows when we will return to ‘normal’? What we can be sure of, however, is the speed and complexity of the world’s evolvement. If 2020 has taught us anything, it is to expect the unexpected and accept that we can in no way predict what the future holds.

Yet, through it all, ISA has maintained a vibrant international identity of expats and locals within a “palpable sense of belonging and community”.

ISA will always end with excellence, because it begins with care.
