BY PAUL MURTON

BIRLINN LIMITED £17.99

★★★★☆ Travelling the length and breadth of the ‘classic’ Scottish Highlands, from the Trossachs and central Highlands through the Great Glen and onto the Cairngorms, Paul Murton regales his audience with tales that exude charm and character. Far from the basic travel information that could be found with a quick internet search, Murton’s book is incredibly well informed and has the feeling of a local sharing advice – perhaps only to be expected when the author is the presenter of the BBC TV’s Grand Tours of Scotland and a man of Argyll. As well as bringing a fresh eye to popular destinations such as Ben Nevis, Loch Ness and Glencoe, the book fulfils its promise to introduce the reader to some even wilder locations.

It’s true that travel books on the Highlands are plentiful, making it somewhat challenging to find one which truly stands out, but Murton manages to do just that. Undoubtedly his extensive knowledge informs the reader, but what makes this book unique is Murton’s ability to entertain the reader in a variety of ways – from historical stories, to passages of literature, verses of poetry, recounted conversations and engaging snippets of human interest stories. Adding yet another distinctive dimension, the book dives deep into time travel too, with immersive stories of clan rivalries, cattle rustling and Jacobite tales. Rich in discourse, the reader is invited to join Murton on every step of the journey – a rather luxurious experience – from the comforts of your very own home. From gamekeepers to modern Highlanders, clan chiefs and battle re-enactors, the connections are yours to make too.

With beautifully illustrated maps and wonderful photos, the book makes for an enticing read and will no doubt leave you feeling inspired and invigorated to explore the much loved Highlands with fresh insights. A perfect travel guide companion for the era of staycations and micro adventures.
