A new perspective

By combining the best elements of traditional and modern estate agency, Paton & Co offers a fresh approach to selling your home

Patrick and Celia Paton had talked about launching their own business together for years, but it wasn’t until the beginning of 2021, after a year that made so many of us rethink our priorities, that the Patons decided to pool their talents and experience in marketing and property with the launch of Paton & Co. As Celia says: “Working for competing agencies, or in marketing roles where I always wanted to be helping Paddy but couldn’t, led to a lot of conversations where we’d end up thinking: we should be doing this for ourselves. With Paton & Co, we combine my marketing skill set with Paddy’s sales experience and run an amazing agency we believe in 100% - and that works alongside our family life.”

So what makes Paton & Co different from other property agencies? It’s more than the simple belief in being able to do things better. As Patrick says: “Everyone says that. However, in the main, the market only really has an option of either

traditional or online. There’s nothing really in between, and that’s what we bring to the table. Paton & Co offers a hybrid agency combining the good points of traditional, with high levels of communication and the personal touch as clients know who they’re dealing with, alongside the good points of modern agency including professional marketing, immersive and interactive property details, and advertising through many different channels.”

Based in the Borders, where the couple live with their young sons, Jock and Freddie, Celia and Patrick bring a shared passion for property to their business. With a background in property marketing, Celia has also studied sociology and counselling. “Skills learnt through each help me when delivering a good service for our clients as, while it sounds clichéd, I really do care about each individual’s property journey,” she says.

Patrick came to property in his twenties after returning to Scotland from Australia. He initially worked in property management with The Flat Company before going on to gain invaluable experience with Knight Frank, Smiths Gore/Savills, and Rettie & Co., where he became a partner. “Property sales, and specifically negotiations, are something I particularly enjoy,” Patrick says. “I love getting out and meeting people, whether on a valuation or doing viewings. It’s what keeps my role interesting.”

Having launched in March 2021, initially covering Scotland, Paton

& Co extended their reach into Northumberland in September last year – a natural progression as Patrick’s comprehensive experience in the Scottish market is complemented by ten years working in the Northumberland market. From a beautifully renovated 18th century home outside Melrose to a coastal cottage and holiday home near Applecross, Paton & Co showcases a diverse range of properties. As Celia says: “Our focus in on selling properties that we believe we can add value to – in terms of the property presentation, the sales price achieved, and our belief in the quality of the product that we are taking to market. Whether that property is a tiny one bedroom bothy or a large country home, it’s about doing the best possible job for our clients.”
