A SCUNTHORPE boxer is celebrating a return to his winning ways following a recent fight in which he was commended for his performance, and hopes to make the town feel “proud and uplifted” by bringing title belts back to Scunthorpe.

James Richardson started boxing at the age of ten and has won 40 of his 65 bouts, becoming a regional champion and an England international boxer, as well as a silver medallist in the British tri-nations championship.

Last month, James defeated Jake Bray in Night Of The Prospects, a special show held at Newark Showground, and was left “delighted” by the result.

He said: “This was my first outing this year and I hope for a busy year that can put me in contention for regional title belt fights.

“I was delighted to get the stoppage, and everyone is commending me on my performance.”

The former Brumby Engineering and North Lindsey College student lives with his parents and sister Gemma, a Team GB member.

Trained by his father Ricko at Scunthorpe Boxing Club, James joined the paid ranks in autumn 2021 and has won seven of his eight bouts including a shock defeat to Lithuanian Edvinas Puplauskas last November.

He said: “I learnt from it. Being the best I can be and reaching some great highs within the sport has helped deal with big challenges.

“It requires complete focus to keep my mind clear.

“I love everything about it, showcasing the skills I’ve learnt but also fighting hard and close up.

“Fans love seeing the boxer they support really going for it proving how tough even how hard he is and I’m keen to oblige and show courage and fearlessness.

“My ambition is to reach the top and bring title belts back to Scunthorpe, hopefully including the Midland title later in 2024.”

James said it would be “great” to have more support within Scunthorpe, and is calling on businesses or individuals to contact him regarding his sponsorship opportunities.
