ASSO TWO-DAY open

PENN PLUS MATCH - points for top 10

a strong entry of top match anglers took part in the first Penn Plus event held over two days at Hythe, Kent.

Winner was local angler Tom Wells, of Deal, who finished with three zone points and 9.570kg. On the first day he was on peg 38 in zone 3 and caught 4.310kg, while the next day he won zone 1 with 5.260kg from peg 2.

ipswich angler Craig Bradshaw was second overall with six zone points and 8.300kg. He was third in his zone on both days.

Third went to Simon roberts, of Sizewell, who also had six zone points (a fifth and first) and 7.670kg.

With the match attracting Penn Plus status, there were points awarded to tenth place.

Day 1 zone winners were richard Burt, peg 3, 5.220kg; andrew Dugdale, peg 29, 3.200kg; Martyn read, peg 40, 6.500kg and ian reynolds, peg 61, 4.780kg.

Day 2 zone winners were Tom Wells; Saul Page, peg 33, 4.460kg; Stu little, peg 51, 5.080kg and Simon roberts, peg 63, 4.910kg.

amroth, pembs, 91 anglers Fished in an increasing­ly strong easterly wind, there were 29 fish weighed in by 23 anglers in this flounder match.

Winner was Pembroke angler Hadyn Cole, who caught two flounders for 795g. Haydn also teamed up with Mark Benett to win the pairs with four fish for 1.495kg.

Second-placed Phil Yates, Kilgetty, caught a brace of fish for 745g, while Mike Mather, Cardiff, was third with two for 720g.

Result: 1 Haydn Cole, Pembroke, 2 flounders, 795g (9pts); 2 Phil Yates, Kilgetty, 2, 745g (8); 3 Mike Mather, Cardiff, 2, 720g (7). Heaviest fish – Keith Stephens, Swansea, 690g (2).

angLing truSt WyVern region open

Slapton Sands, devon, 163 anglers an improving forecast after weeks of storms produced the largest entry in recent years to fish this annual event.

The 163 anglers recorded good catches of dogfish during daylight, and whiting in the last two hours.

Winner was Dan Hale, from newton abbot, with a combinatio­n of a 1.33lb pouting, representi­ng 88.67% of specimen size, and 1.66lb dogfish (66.40%) for 155.07% points. He was presented with the top prize of £200. His pouting was the match’s best specimen.

Second-placed Terry Hartnell recorded 138.60%, and his 7.82lb thornback ray was the event’s heaviest fish.

Team winners were anyfish no Boss anywhere (Ben Bradstock, Terry Hartnell, rob Marshall and Derek Bristow).

Result: 1 Dan Hale, newton abbot, 1.33lb pouting and 1.66lb dogfish, 155.07% (16pts); 2 Terry Hartnell, Seaton, 1.51lb dogfish and 7.82lb thornback ray, 138.60% (15); 3 Stuart Withyman, Honiton SaC, 1.99lb dogfish and 0.87lb pouting, 137.60% (14).

Loughor estuary, Swansea, 60 anglers There were plenty of flounders caught in this measure and release event, which raised £250 for the Welsh youth team.

Winner was Kevin Hughes, of neath, with a 356cm total, with second going to Zak Williams, of newport, with 251cm.

Result: 1 Kevin Hughes, neath, 356cm (6pts); 2 Zak Williams, newport, 251cm (5); 3 Paul Morgan, Swansea, 248cm, including 39cm flounder (4). longest fish –nicky Bevan, Swansea, and Darren gregory, Cardiff, both 39cm (both 2).

the 41St Ford open

Weston Shore, Southampto­n, 92 anglers Winner Ken Cross, from Botley, caught a 2lb 8dr flounder to win the £250 top prize, £176 in the heaviest fish pool, and £88 in section money.

With 24 anglers returning flounders to the scales, second place was shared between Paul Coleman and Don Fucco with two fish each for 1-15-8 from the rolling Mills section.

Result: 1 Ken Cross, Botley, 2-0-8 flounder (9pts); jt 2 Paul Coleman, Fords SaC and Don Fucco, Whitchurch, two fish, 1-15-8 (both 8).

Fountain open

Seabrook and hythe, Kent, 83 anglers Deal angler Dave Mewburn included a 3.20kg thornback ray in his match-winning 8.55kg total.

The match, fished on a measure-and-returnto-weight conversion, produced pouting, dogfish, whiting, dabs and thornbacks.

runner-up was Julian Shambrook, Torquay, with 8.34kg, while andy Hurcombe, Thanet, finished in third place with 8.12kg, also including a 3.20kg thornback.

Result: 1 Dave Mewburn, Deal, 8.55kg (8pts); 2 Julian Shambrook, Torquay, 8.34kg (7); 3 andy Hurcombe, Thanet, 8.12kg (6). lady – Jackie Wilson, essex, 1.63kg.

Sewerby Steps to paull, east yorks, 86 anglers This traditiona­l new Year’s Day match was fished on an ebbing tide in ideal conditions that worsened as the match progressed.

nev Charleswor­th, of Withernsea, returned to Dimlington, and on his first cast, using a single yellowtail lug, hooked a 4.775kg thornback (10lb 1oz). This was the winning fish in the biggest fish category and won £330. nev also won the biggest bag prize with 6.15kg.

Jim Bean, Hornsea SaC, was second with a 2.90kg cod, winning £210, and D Birch was third with a 1.925kg cod, winning £100.

Result: 1 neville Charleswor­th, Withernsea, 4.775kg thornback ray (8pts); 2 Jim Bean, Hornsea, 2.90kg cod (7); 3 D Birch, 1.925kg cod (6).

neW MiLton SFC FLounder open

poole harbour, dorset, 70 anglers The Baiter section of Poole Harbour produced the top two in this flounder match.

Both Mike Powell, of Canford Heath, and James

Hill, Poole, fished this area, recording 11-8-0 and 10-6-8 respective­ly.

Third-placed riley Price was in the Hamworthy section, where he caught 7-12-4. Mike Brown, of Southampto­n, won the Whitecliff section with 4-4-12.

Result: 1 Mike Powell, Canford Heath, 11-8-8 (7pts); 2 James Hill, Poole, 10-6-8 (6); 3 riley Price, Hamworthy, 7-12-4 (5). Zone – Mike Brown, Southampto­n, 4-4-12 (2).

Southern League rnd 1 and open

Weston shore, hants, 68 anglers There was a tie for top spot between Steve Paulley and ian Dancey with 1-14-0 from zone C peg 84 and 89 respective­ly.

Their catches consisted of two flounders, a whiting and a top-up for Steve, and two flounders for ian.

Third place went to lee gatrell on peg 38 (zone B) with a 1lb 9oz flounder, the event’s heaviest fish, and two top-ups for 1-11-0.

Result: 1 Steve Paulley and ian Dancey, Waterloovi­lle, both 1-14-0, (both 6pts); 3 lee gatrell, Portsmouth, 1-11-0 (4). Zone – Mark Hiscott, Bournemout­h, 1-3-0 (2).

WeLSh FSa eaSt region Shore League rnd 1

aberthaw & Boverton, Vale of glamorgan, 67 anglers Three dogfish and a 4.6kg thornback ray for a 6.94kg total secured victory for andrew Withey, of Bridgend.

runner-up Mario aspiou, of Barry, finished on 5.85kg, consisting of three dogfish and a 3.9kg thornback ray, while Daniel Crump, of Barry, finished third with 5.24kg, after catching two dogfish and a 3.08kg thornback ray.

Result: 1 andrew Withey, Bridgend, 6.94kg (6pts); 2 Mario aspiou, Barry, 5.85kg (5); 3 Daniel Crump, Barry, 5.24kg (4).

WhitLey Bay aS 56th annuaL open

plantation Burn to tynemouth pier, tyne & Wear, 92 anglers Fished in good conditions, the last of a dying northerly swell, the top 10 anglers all caught between two and eight cod.

Winner andy Crowe, of Scarboroug­h, caught eight fish for 23-4-0 from St Mary’s island, near Whitley Bay.

Phil Patterson’s heaviest fish came from just a little further north at Collywell Bay, Seaton Sluice.

Result: 1 andy Crowe, Scarboroug­h, 8 fish, 23-4-0 (9pts); 2 Derek Wood, Tynemouth, 4, 12-12-0 (8); 3 Chris Potts, Sunderland, 4, 9-10-0 (7). Heaviest fish – Phil Patterson, 6-2-0 (3).
