BLACKDOWN SAC OPEN Blue Anchor slipway to Minehead town beach, Somerset, 72 anglers

Roland Broomfield caught two codling to win this catch and release event with 59 points. The second and third placed anglers, Brad Lock and Chris Equeall, both had one codling.

Result: 1 Roland Broomfield, Lymington, 2 fish, 59pts (7pts); 2 Brad Lock, Taunton, 1 fish, 51 (6); 3 Chris Equeall, Cardiff, 1, 48 (5).

CHESIL LEAGUE & OPEN Masonic, Portland, Dorset, 40 anglers

Smoothhoun­ds weighing into double figures are very rare at Portland, but a 113cm fish, which converted to 12lb, helped Rob Marshall to a winning 24-8-0 from his peg in zone A.

Second and third were filled by anglers in the same zone, with Julian Shambrook recording 10 fish for 18-2-0 and Mike Brown 17-14-0, consisting of 21 pollack.

Zone B winner was Ben Bradstock with 5-9-0, with the biggest fish in this section being Jeff Fisk’s 2lb 2oz dogfish.

Result: 1 Rob Marshall, Taunton, 24-8-0, including heaviest fish, 12lb smoothhoun­d (4pts); 2 Julian Shambrook, Torquay, 18-2-0 (3); 3 Mike Brown, Southampto­n, 17-14-0 (2). Zone– Ben Bradstock, Honiton, 5-9-0 (1).

HORNSEA SAC MARK LOUDEN OPEN Sewerby Steps to Paull Lighthouse, East Yorks, 100 anglers

Winning angler in this biggest fish match was Rob Neale, from Hull, with a 3.775kg cod. Second went to Steve Williams, of Jarrow, with a fish of 1.325kg.

Result: 1 Rob Neale, Hull, 3.775kg cod (10pts); 2 Steve Williams, Jarrow, 1.325kg cod (9); 3 Bill Hope, Hull, 1.1kg cod (8).

SOUTHERN LEAGUE AND OPEN Sandbanks, Dorset, 87 anglers

Wayne Perrett, of Southampto­n, won this match with 1-11-0 from peg D86, his catch including the heaviest fish, a 1lb 6oz flounder.

Ben Arnold, of Worthing, was close behind with 1-8-0 from peg B44. Third place went to Nicky Frewin, of Axbridge, at peg D78 with 1-1-0. Zone winners were Darren Stevens at A10 with 0-14-0 and Lee Gatrell at C64 with 0-7-0.

Result: 1 Wayne Perret, Southampto­n, 1-11-0, including heaviest fish, 1-6-0 flounder (8pts); 2 Ben Arnold, Worthing, 1-8-0 (7); 3 Nicky Frewin, Axbridge, 1-1-0 (6). Zones – Darren Stevens, Bristol, 0-14-0 & Lee Gatrell, Portsmouth, 0-7-0 (both 3).

THE 10TH RNLI CHARITY OPEN, Amroth, Pembrokesh­ire, 84 anglers

Tenby angler Peter Taylor was the only competitor to catch two sizeable flatfish, and his 0.670kg total was enough to win the £200 first prize for the best bag of flounders caught.

The Penn Plus match, with points for the top 10, attracted an increased attendance compared to 2016. Fished to the new Welsh FSA minimum size for flounders of 30cm, it resulted in 14 eligible fish, although there were far more flounders measuring more than the old 25cm size.

Runner-up was Welsh FSA East Region stalwart Steve Chadwick, of Cardiff, who caught one fish for 0.495kg, and also scooped the pool for the heaviest fish.

The event raised £500 for the Angle and Tenby lifeboats.

THE 29TH IRISH WINTER SHORE ANGLING FESTIVAL Wexford & Wicklow beaches, Ireland, 309 anglers

With the planned venues of East Wexford being unfishable for two days, the 103 anglers fishing each of the three matches found the venues moved.

Winter conditions saw the total number of fish caught, even with a reduced size limit, down to 2,206, compared to the 2016 total in excess of 5,000.

Winner Paul Whelan won zone C on Day 1 in Wicklow, adding second place finishes in zone C on Day 2 at Curracloe and zone D on Day 3 at Clones Strand and Dodd’s Rocks, to finish with 76 points.

Finishing only a point behind was Ged Stevens, who was third in zone 3 on Day 1, first in zone A on Day 2 and second in zone C on Day 3.

Third place went to the 2016 Penn Sea League champion, Saul Page with 72 points, which included third in zone D on Day 2 and first in zone D on Day 3.

Longest fish on Day 1 was Derek Kenrick’s 41cm codling, while on Day 2 it was Gordy Hardman’s 31cm flounder, and on Day 3 Joe Carley’s 41cm whiting.

Penn Sea League rule 2 applies (multi-day event, maximum of 20pts to winner, zone points based on daily entry) for this event.

Next year’s event will be held from January 25-27.

THE 41ST FORDS SPORTS & SOCIAL SAC OPEN BEACH CHAMPIONSH­IP Weston Shore, Southampto­n, 86 anglers

A flounder of 2lb 2oz secured top spot for Mike Taylor, who was in red zone. Second went to Dave Stewart in white zone with 1-9-0. Only 14 anglers weighed in fish.

Result: 1 Mike Taylor, Fairoak, 4-4-0 (8pts); 2 Dave Stewart, Gosport, 3-2-0 (7); 3 Tony Sherwood, Park Gate, 1-4-0.

THE FOUNTAIN OPEN Princes Parade & Marine Parade, Hythe, Kent, 87 anglers

Hastings angler Rex Palmer caught 12 fish for 1.860kg to run out winner of this match. Second and third places came from the same zone.

Result: 1 Rex Palmer, Hastings, 1.860kg (8pt); 2 Luke Hutton, Dover, 1.170kg (7); 3 Darren Bond, Lancing, 1.140kg (6). Zones – Sam Collier, Ben Bradstock, Honiton & Phil Tanner, Folkestone (all 3). Heaviest fish – Hugh Rathbone, Dorset, 0.800kg plaice (3).

WELSH FSA SHORE LEAGUE Aberthaw & Boverton, Vale of Glamorgan. 82 anglers

Four spotted rays, three dogfish and a pouting weighing a total of 7.80kg secured victory for Daniel Crump, of Barry, who was fishing at Stout Point.

Runner-up John Griffiths, of Tonyrefail, chose the same venue and caught two codling and three rockling for 3.71kg.

Roy Tapper, of Cardiff, took third place with nine rockling, a conger and a pollack for 3.36kg while fishing at Boverton.

Result: 1 Daniel Crump, Barry, 7.80kg (8pts); 2 John Griffiths, Tonyrefail, 3.71kg (7); 3 Roy Tapper, Cardiff, 3.36kg (6).

WEST COAST TACKLE LEAGUE RND 2 & OPEN Otterspool, Merseyside, 50 anglers

Eleven fish caught, for 382cm, secured the win here for Garry Hutson, of Cleethorpe­s.

The event’s biggest fish was a 53cm codling for Simon Dawber, of Wigan.

Result: 1 Garry Hutson, Cleethorpe­s, 11 fish, 382cm (5pts); 2 Bill Lindfield, Greasby, 14, 345cm (4); 3 Stuart Dewhurst, Preston, 14, 333cm (3). Zone – Gordon Thornes, Connah’s Qay, 325cm (2). Longest fish – Simon Dawber, Wigan, 53cm codling (2).
