Q: If I only use one lure rod, what casting weight should it be? TREVOR MILES, BY EMAIL

HG says: You do need to match the casting weight of the rod to your local waters and the lures you use.

In general, I bet you that most anglers who lure fish for bass from the shore in the UK and Ireland could be fishing with a specialist lure rod rated somewhere in the region of 5-35g.

Sure, I’ll go heavier in much rougher conditions, or when I need to use heavier lures for whatever reason, but I reckon that at least 90 per cent of the time I am using a lure rod rated to cast no heavier than 35g, and I seem to do alright with it.
