The largest member of the skate and ray family, the current British boatcaught record for skate stands at 227lb, with a fish caught at Tobermory, Inner Hebrides, Scotland in 1986. However, there is little doubt that several larger skate have been caught and released, as it is extremely difficult to accurately weigh such huge and cumbersome fish afloat. A very accurate estimate of the weight of a skate can be calculated by using a size-to-weight chart, which can be downloaded at: www.catchalot.co.uk
