FIXED-SPOOLS PROS & CONS
Fixed-spool reels are more suited for casting lures, in my experience, and I do enjoy them for this, although they require a lot more TLC if you want them to last.
Their biggest drawback is the bulk and shape, which often sees them getting in the way on a kayak. I’ve used the Maxximus LP Magnet 6BB baitcasters for four years, and a 11300 for casting, and have landed some decent fish with no trouble at all.
For kayak anglers out for a bit of fun mixed with nostalgia, there are also the traditional centrepins. Giving a 1:1 retrieve, Scarboroughs, the South African KP, antique Starbacks and modern versions of designs such as Alvey have all taken decent fish off kayaks. The freerunning designs can prove a handful at times, and casting can be an issue.
Still, what’s wrong with having a bit of fun? When my friend Cam Clearie died, he left me his inherited centrepin because he knew I’d enjoy using it, and I did.
