SPECIES
The only species to which turbot are similar in appearance and, subsequently, might be confused with, is brill, to which it is closely related. The top surface of both species is usually pale to sandybrown in colour, with a few lights spots and raised nodules. However, brill have a more oval-shaped body so, with a little experience, are fairly easy to distinguish.
The average size of turbot caught by boat anglers around the UK is probably 3-8lb, but double-figure fish, and a few specimens in excess of 20lb, are caught each year.
The current British boat-caught record for turbot stands at 33lb 12oz, caught off Salcombe in 1980.
