GUIDE TO MUTLIPLIERS
A selection of reels costing under £160.
Multiplier reels remain a dominant feature on the UK surfcasting scene, even though the advent of braided line has boosted sales of fixed-spool reels, which many also argue offer easier casting.
All the major manufacturers of sea tackle boast multipliers in their range, and most share many similarities. As always, it is the price that varies, with some shore reels costing more than £400 each. However, there are plenty of models at more attractive prices, and here we show nine of our favourites. Prices quoted are only guides because we’ve found most of, if not all these reels, are offered at often substantial discounts. Some above our £160 limit here can be found at lower prices. Therefore, always shop around for a bargain.
Multipliers feature two types of braking systems – those with magnetic brakes, or a centrifugal system, where small brake blocks move on a pinion.
Magnetic braking systems are very popular due to their ease of adjustment, usually by a slider or dial on the sideplate.
Some reels maintain the centrifugal braking set-up so adored by anglers who like to tinker with the insides of their reels to add or subtract the fibre or plastic brake blocks to slow or speed up the reel spool.
