GENERAL INFORMATION

-

A web search will reveal numerous sport fishing lodges located along Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. These range from five-star luxury establishments offering sumptuous comfort, air conditioning and fine dining, such as the outstanding Crocodile Bay lodge, near Golfito, to others that are more basic, such as Samara, on the Gulf of Nicoya. Both provide world-class fishing.

There are direct flights from London Gatwick to San José with British Airways, which flies several times a week. Depending on your arrival time and the location of your final destination, it is sometimes possible to complete your journey in one day.

Reaching most lodges involves either a short internal flight or a drive of several hours, and I prefer to spend the first night at a hotel in San José. Airport hotels are not expensive, and following a good night’s sleep you arrive at the lodge fresh and relaxed the next day. If you choose to stay in downtown San José, exercise caution when walking around, especially after dark.

Costa Rica does have recorded cases of malaria, mostly on the Caribbean coast, but these are rare and isolated. Check current health requirements before you travel.

You will need high factor suncream and an insect repellent. One of the most effective repellents for annoying insects is the Avon Skin So Soft Range, which offers great value for money. Even the armed forces use the stuff!
