With a robust construction and supple tip section, the rod offers great bite detection and makes even small fish good fun. It is perfectly suited to drift fishing over clean ground.

With big fish that want to pull back, the rod bends all the way to the butt and absorbs lunges very well, making it also perfectly suited to fishing lures for pollack over wrecks and reefs.

Flicking a bait or lure away from the boat is easy due to the supple end section and, when fishing at anchor, this allows your bait to sit steadily on the bottom, where a stiffer rod may bounce out the lead weight.

When asked to recommend a generalpurpose multiplier as a starter reel, I mention the SL30SH because it is bomb-proof and idiot-proof. It is robust and user-friendly, with a corrosionresistant body, adjustable handle (even and balanced or power wind), simple star-drag, and great line capacity.

Setting the ratchet is easy, while the large, strong bail-arm lever is good when your hands are wet or cold. I like the smooth drag. With a little practice, it’s okay for casting too. The very simple construction and big, strong screw heads make it easy to take apart for cleaning and servicing.
