FOUR GREAT MARKS TO TRY NOW…

-

1 HOLES BAY

This is a relatively shallow muddy mark with a small channel running some 50 yards out. Casting distance is not an issue along this stretch, and I always favour the outer edge of the channel.

Of all the shore marks around Poole Harbour, Holes Bay offers your best chance of connecting with a real big fish, and a four-pounder is a real possibility.

Don’t expect a bagging session because this is a specimen mark where you may get a couple of fish during a trip if you are lucky.

Really big ragworm baits presented on a size 1 Aberdeen-type hook are the key to success. Generally, flounders become more active when there is some flow going through the channel, whereas the action often melts away during slack-water periods.

Because these bigger fish often slowly suck and nose a bait, you should never strike too quickly. You may have to leave it for several minutes before they eventually take it properly. I like to use a running leger at this venue, but others favour a two-hook flapper.

Hooks need to match the bait, but don’t go too small.

January is always the best month for catching a very special flounder that dreams are made of, but some quality fish will be caught in December.

GETTING THERE: Running along the A350 as you head into Poole, Holes Bay is an easy venue to locate. Be careful when parking because this is a very busy road, so, if possible, park in one of the back roads and then take a short walk over the A350 to the venue. A footpath runs along the entire stretch.
