Top angler of this popular annual event, now in its 97th year and organised by Filey Brigg Angling Society, was Tom Marshall, from Flamborough. During the Festival, which featured eight shore matches and four boat events throughout the nine days of fishing on the Yorkshire coast, Tom also had the greatest aggregate over the week from the shore. He was also named shore angler of the week, thanks to four top three places, two sixths and an eighth from a possible eight shore events.
The shore matches, fished between Whitby and Bridlington, were split equally between heaviest single fish and heaviest bag competitions.
The biggest matches are always the two Sunday events, which this year boasted top prizes of £500 and £750, culminating in the North of England Codling Championship. Two of the boat matches were cancelled due to bad weather.
Over the week there were more than 70 trophies presented.
Other trophy winners included Richard Cappleman, who caught the heaviest cod during shore competitions, a fish of 6lb 2oz. He was also the boat angler with the heaviest aggregate weight.
Joe Harrison was junior angler of the week and, for the second year running, he won the junior section of the North of England Codling Championship, this time with a bag of cod totalling 3-13-3.
James Walker’s 8-6-2 bag of fish, from Flamborough, was the heaviest bag weight caught in one match by a junior angler. He also won the junior heaviest fish trophy with a cod of 3lb 10oz. Audrey Childs was the top female competitor.
