PENN PLUS THE NORTH WEST COD CHAMPIONSH­IPS Gynn Square to Rossall, Lancashire, 60 anglers

Conditions were the opposite of what organisers wanted for cod fishing, with a slight north-easterly breeze and rain.

In what was a single heaviest cod match, only two fish were caught, both by local anglers. Winner was David Hoyle with a 43cm specimen, followed by Andy Livingston with a 40cm cod. Top in the single heaviest other fish category was Shane Russell with a 77cm ray.

Only 47 anglers entered the optional overall length pool, with top spot going to Simon Drayton with 760cm in zone 2, followed by Ged Stevens with 582cm from zone 1 and George Smith with 578cm. PENN PLUS ST SERFS SAC 22ND ANNUAL CHRISTMAS OPEN Elie to St Andrews, Fie, 136 anglers

Winner of the £1,000 prize for the heaviest fish was Paul Buddles, who had travelled from Alnwick, Northumber­land, for this popular annual event. He also had the second-heaviest bag weight of 19-12-0.

Heaviest bag weight winner was John Corner, of Livingston, with 20-13-0.

Although the match was fished in abysmal weather (a very strong westsouth-westerly wind with intermitte­nt heavy showers), at least the south-facing part of the coast had some dirty water, which seemed to help the fishing.

BEDLINGTON STATION NORTHUMBRI­A OPEN Northumber­land rover, 126 anglers

Winner of this match, which was fished in a flat sea with a strong westerly wind, was Andy McLauchlan, of Bedlington, with three cod for 11-9-0 from The Torrs at Boulmer.

Second with seven fish for 10-6-0 was Steve Williams, of Jarrow, who fished at Swine Dene, next to Cullernose Point.

Third place went to Brian Lee with three fish for 9-2-0, caught at Marden Rocks, near Alnmouth, and the same venue produced the biggest fish, a 6lb 5oz cod for Steve Robson.

CLOUGHTON OPEN Skinningro­ve jetty to Spurn pilot boat jetty, East Yorks, 98 anglers, 98 anglers

Chris France, of Scarboroug­h, won this heaviest cod match with a fish of 6lb 8oz, and also scooped the heaviest bag of cod pools money with eight fish for 33-6-0.

The second heaviest fish, caught by Robbie Harrison, weighed 6lb 5oz, while the second best bag of cod was Davy Turnbull’s eight fish for 21-5-0.

■ Result: 1 Chris France, Scarboroug­h, 6-8-0, also heaviest bag of cod, 33-6-0 (9pts); 2 Robbie Harrison, 6-5-0 (8); 3 Luke McCourt, Whitby, 6-0-0 (7).

DEAL AC 1919 PIER & BEACH FESTIVAL Sandown, Deal and Walmer, Kent, 74 anglers

Fished in four zones at Sandown Castle, Deal Castle, Walmer Castle and Deal pier, the match winner was England internatio­nal Saul Page with 8.060kg from zone A.

The same zone produced the runner-up, Louie Smith, who finished on 7.470kg.

Luke Hutton ensured local Kent anglers filled the frame by finishing third with 7.380kg from zone C. Best weight in zone D was 6.420kg for Toby Libby.

EAST ANGLIAN TEAMS OF FIVE RND 3 & OPEN Aldeburgh, Suffolk, 70 anglers

Fishing at peg 55 on Aldeburgh beach, Graham Adams caught 28 fish for 9-9-0 to win this league match.

Runner-up Jason Banham, on peg 69, caught 30 fish for 9-2-0, while third-placed Barry Diaper, at peg 63, recorded 21 fish for 7-10-0.

Longest fish was a 36cm bass at peg 37 for Vic Pearce.

■ Result: 1 Graham Adams, Shotley, 28 fish, 9-9-0 (7pts); 2 Jason Banham, Ipswich, 30, 9-2-0 (6); 3 Barry Diaper, Woodbridge, 21, 7-10-0 (5). Longest fish – Vic Pearce, Clacton, 36cm bass (2). GORLESTON TACKLE CENTRE ERNIE MILLAR MEMORIAL OPEN Gorleston, Norfolk, 45 anglers

With all catches over 18cm counting, there were lots of fish, mainly small whiting, to provide plenty of action.

Bevan Self, of Great Yarmouth, and Mick Wall, of Lowestoft, both finished on 299 points, but Bevan on peg 42 edged it with 41 fish compared to Mick’s 40 from peg 49. Third went to Mel Mitchell with 277 points at peg 36.

The raffle raised a superb £760 for Cancer Research.

JE WILLIAMS MEMORIAL TWO-DAY FESTIVAL,

Otterspool, Merseyside, 226 anglers England angler Kenny McCoy, from Sunderland, finished with a zone win and a second for three points to win this twoday event on the River Mersey. Biggest fish was a 74cm cod, estimated at 10lb for Phil Glover (left), from the Isle of Man.

NORTHERN IRELAND FSA EAST COAST OPEN Waterfoot beach, Co Antrim, 84 anglers

Conditions were harsh and competitor­s were troubled by weed and a fairly heavy sea, but three angles eventually tied on 18 fish each, mostly flounders, with length dictating the final positions.

First was Eugene Andrews, whose 18 fish were worth 370 points in zone A. Secondplac­ed Jonny Gilbert was also in zone A, where he had 363 points. Harry McKee Jnr, who was third, was in zone C and amassed 355 points.

■ Result: 1 Eugene Andrews, Glengormle­y, 370pts (8pts); 2 Jonny Gilbert, Carrickfer­gus, 363 (7); 3 Harry McKee Jnr, Belfast, 355 (6). Zones –Jordan Graham, 211cm & Craig Henderson, 279cm (both 3). Longest fish – Remiguus Dunda, 45cm bass (3).

VICTORIA HOTEL OPEN Redcar to Filey, North Yorks, 86 anglers

With a new sponsor, the Victoria Hotel, backing this roving cod fishing event between the South Gare at Redcar and coble landing at Filey, the match attracted 86 anglers, with 23 weighing in fish.

Winner of the £1,000 prize for the heaviest cod was George Horner with a 4lb 7oz codling. Second was Chris Scaife, who earned £500 for a 3lb 9oz fish, and also scooped the £100 prize for the heaviest bag with four cod for 6-12-0. Third went to Dave Gyte with a fish of 3lb 4oz.

A raffle for a two-day stay at the Victoria Hotel raised £183 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Service.
