■ Three teams tied for first place in the World Junior Shore Championships in Portugal. Finishing on 13 points each were England, Italy and Spain, but on countback Italy won gold, with England second and Spain third. Steve Rathbone, a former individual gold winner, took silver. Alongside Steve in the England team were Callum Graham, Daniel Stote, Michael Dawkins and David Morris.

■ Ounces separated the top three in the Whitby Spring Festival. With cod and ling scarce, anglers switched to pollack. Winner Paul Darby won £1,000 for catching a 12lb 4oz fish, with Mike Morgan second on 12lb 2oz 8dr and Shane Hall third with 12lb 2oz.

2000

■ A move to help secure the future of eel populations in rivers throughout England and Wales was announced by the Environment Agency. It had produced a consultation document as a first step in developing a strategy for the management of eels.

■ A new world record for a European bass was accepted by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA). The bass of 20lb 14oz was caught at Cap d’Agde, France, in September 1999 and was accepted as a 30lb (15kg) line-class record.

■ Ronald Hyde, who had never caught a bass, boated the biggest of the year so far when he landed a 16lb 12oz fish. The angler, from Romford, Essex, was fishing aboard a small boat out of Leigh, Essex.

1980

■ Fish of the month was one destined to be a new British record. The 4lb 14oz 9dr sole was caught by Peter Smart from the shore on the west coast of Guernsey.

■ John Holden, sea angling adviser for Bruce and Walker, gave Sea Angler a demonstration of the firm’s Seamatch 130 rod, which represented a breakthrough with carbon in rod design.
