Six of the best: Iceland
Hit the slopes
Superbreak (superbreak. com/agents) is offering ski packages next winter, backed by its direct charters to Akureyri.
The town makes an ideal base for snow fans: it is a stone’s throw from the mountainous Troll Peninsular, home to ski resorts such as Hlidarfjall and Siglufjordur and known for its heli-skiing.
Offroading
Clients can enjoy their own TopGear moment by learning how to tackle Iceland’s wintry offroad conditions in a modified 4X4 truck. They will take on epic landscapes such as Landmannalaugar and Eyjafjallajökull. Experiences along the way include bathing in a natural hot river and the Northern Lights. SELL IT: Nordic Experience’s four-night Long Weekend Arctic Truck Experience costs from £2,555pp, departing October-April. nordicexperience.co.uk
Horse around
Famed for having an extra gait, Icelandic horses offer an excellent way of tackling the rugged terrain and horse rides feature on many clients’ wish lists. For the more adventurous clients suggest tackling part of the historic Kjölur Trail in the highlands.
Whale of a time
With more than 20 kinds of whale in its waters it’s small wonder whale watchers flock to Iceland. While you can catch excursions in various places, including Reykjavik harbour, the best sightings are off the northern coast from either Eyjafjordur or Husavik, both accessible from Akureyri. TOP TIP: While April to September is prime viewing time, whale sightings are year-round. Watch orcas feeding in mass off Snaefellsnes Peninsula in January and March.
Snap it up
From capturing the Northern Lights to snapping landscapes as they change with the seasons Iceland is a year-round photographer’s paradise. Dedicated trips that enable enthusiasts to bag the perfect shot are becoming increasingly popular. TOP TIP: Wild Photography Holidays’ has a new 10-night Midsummer Birds & Landscapes Workshop, leaving June 9 2018, from £3,250pp. wildphotographyholidays.com
