Why sell it?

Far-flung Cape Verde is not the British traveller's first choice for sun, but the 10-strong volcanic archipelago offers some of the world’s best beaches and almost year-round sun coupled with average temperatures of 27C.

Just a six-hour flight from the UK, direct flights are available from Gatwick, Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester and Glasgow, to Sal and Boa Vista.

Beyond the beach, the islands are also renowned for watersports and exploration of its rugged mountains and fertile valleys.

Who to sell to?

Perfect for couples on a honeymoon or romantic break, plenty of hotels offer quiet getaways, combining relaxing days on the beach with action-packed excursions around the island.

Families will enjoy the sandy beaches, and most hotels offer organised activities.

There is a growing trend in Cape Verde towards eco-tourism, particularly on the island of Fogo, where tourists can view the active volcano, Pico do Fogo. The intimate Spinguera Eco Lodge on Boa Vista has just 12 rooms and offers a tranquil escape.

Beach lovers can relax on Boa Vista’s delightful sands, with hotel options including the all-inclusive Iberostar Club Boa Vista. Clients more inclined towards activities and watersports, should be pointed in the direction of Hotel Morabeza, which sits on the golden sands of Santa Maria Beach on the island of Sal.

History and culture lovers should visit Santiago Island, home to the capital as well as UNESCO World Heritage Site Cidade Velha, a prominent 16th century slave trading centre.

For a lighter slice of culture, the island of São Vicente's colourful carnival comes to town 40 days before Easter, with music, costumes, dancing and elaborate floats.
