Commonwealth draw for West Midlands
The West Midlands Growth Company is highlighting the region as a leading UK tourism destination ahead of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Alongside a number of initiatives and a packed events calendar, a new Business and Tourism Programme for Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games has been created to help target potential visitors and the travel trade. Activities will include familiarisation trips, educational training and attendance at travel trade events.
Becky Frall, Head of Visitor Attraction at West Midlands Growth Company, said:
“We are so looking forward to hosting the Commonwealth Games next year, starting July 28. If you think back to the excitement of the Olympics in Japan, we’re going to be mirroring that in Birmingham.”
Maria Sykes from Visit Britain added that the upcoming Games will drive visitors to explore more of the country, and shine a spotlight on the West Midlands “as well as demonstrating the UK’s ability to host events of the highest calibre.”
The West Midlands Growth Company will be assisting the trade by providing some ‘exciting hooks’ to entice travellers next year. “Beyond the sporting theme there’s so much on offer to visitors, from 10 Michelin Star restaurants through to brilliant family attractions such as the Sealife Centre, The Bear Grylls Adventure and LEGOLAND Discovery Centre,” added Frall.
“There are also independent attractions like the Black Country Living Museum, which is the backdrop to the filming of the Peaky
Blinders series.” wmgrowth.com
