Removing weeds

-

I have noticed that what I had thought were healthy cover crops are being choked by weeds. What is the best way to get rid of them? I want to avoid using chemicals if I can.

Getting rid of weeds without using chemicals is almost impossible unless you have unlimited manpower and want to pull them up by hand, or an oldfashioned steerage-hoe, which can rake up the weeds between the rows. Much as I admire your wish to grow game crops without chemicals, it rarely works and all you tend to end up with is a soggy mass of weak plants and weeds. It is better to plant a crop that is attractive to both game and wildlife, and spray the weeds out. For advice on what to plant next year, and what to spray this year’s crop with, contact your agronomist or one of the specialist seed suppliers. They will be able to identify this year’s weeds and offer you advice on when to spray them and what to spray them with. LB
